DC Comics publishing new comics with redesigned Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Jonny Quest

DC Entertainment announced a slate of four new comics, all based on iconic Hanna-Barbera cartoons. However, each will be slightly different and more contemporary. In other words, these aren’t your parents’ Flintstones.

Up first is Scooby Apocalypse, which puts Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Machine gang on a mission to find a cure for a virus that has mutated creatures all around the world. The characters were all designed by Jim Lee, who also wrote the origin story with Keith Giffen (Justice League 3001). The art is by Howard Porter (Superman).

Jonny Quest and his group will star in Future Quest, written by Jeff Parker (Batman ‘66) and drawn by Evan ‘oc’ Shaner (Justice League Darkseid War: Green Lantern). Team Quest will work with some of the other famous Hanna-Barbera characters, like Space Ghost and the Herculoids in the series.

Writer Ken Pontac (Reboot), artist Leonardo Manco (Hellblazer) and Mad Max: Fury Road car designer Mark Sexton combined forces for Wacky Raceland. This will be the “gritty take” on Wacky Racers you never knew you needed.

Lastly, artist Amanda Conner (Harley Quinn) and writer Mark Russell (Prez) are working together on The Flintstones. The series will “use Bedrock’s most popular family to shine a light on humanity’s ancient customs and institutions in a funny origin story of human civilization,” according to DC.

The books will begin hitting comic book stores in May.
