Darth Vader is expected to return to Star Wars in Rogue One and now we're hearing that he will be heavily involved in the story.
JoBlo is reporting that Vader is indeed in the upcoming spinoff film and is expected to have "a larger role than originally thought." It's not clear if he's actually the primary villain, but this rumor suggests that he won't simply make a cameo appearance towards the end of the movie as some fans were speculating.
At the same time, Making Star Wars has similar information, reporting that Vader will have action sequences in Rogue One. Their sources suggest that several storyboard pitches go through various methods Vader could use to kill rebels, including dismembering them using his lightsaber and using the Force to levitate bodies as human shields. If true, this would certainly be the most brutal Vader we have seen so far.
Take all of this with a grain of salt, though, as official information on Rogue One is incredibly scarce. All we know for sure is that it is set before the events of A New Hope and revolves around the group of rebels who steal the plans for the Death Star. It's expected to be much darker than the traditional Star Wars episodes, more like a war movie than a fantasy story.
Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Mads Mikkelsen. It opens on Dec. 16.
