Dakota Johnson calls out ageism in Hollywood, says industry is 'brutal'

50 Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson is calling out what she sees as a serious case of ageism in the entertainment industry.

In an interview with Vogue, Johnson questioned why her mother, Melanie Griffith, and grandmother, Tippi Hedren, aren't in many movies anymore.

The actress asked, "Why isn't my mother in movies? She's an extraordinary actress! Why isn't my grandmother in movies? This industry is f---ing brutal. No matter how tough you are, sometimes there's the feeling of not being wanted."

Johnson went on to say that even as a 26-year-old she still feels this pressure, and whenever she has downtime, she becomes convinced she will never work again.

She isn't the only actress in recent months to discuss the issue of ageism. Last year, Maggie Gyllenhaal revealed that even though she's 37, she was told she was too old to play the love interest of a 55-year-old man in a movie.

“There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time,” she said at the time.
