Cincinnati Reds to retire Pete Rose’s number despite lifetime ban from baseball

Just a month after MLB commissioner Rob Manfred refused to lift Pete Rose’s lifetime ban from baseball, the Cincinnati Reds announced today that the Hit King will still be inducted into to the team’s Hall of Fame. The team will also retire his No. 14.

The Reds announced today that Rose will be inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame on the June 24-26 weekend. The team confirmed plans to retire his number on Twitter.

“Inducting Pete into the Reds Hall of Fame will be a defining moment in the 147-year history of this storied franchise,” Reds CEO Bob Castellini said today. “He is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Reds uniform and it will be an unforgettable experience watching him being honored as such.”

Rose will be the only former Reds player to be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame this year.

Rose was banned from baseball in 1989 after it was uncovered that he bet on baseball. Rose had hoped that Manfred would reconsider the ban, but Manfred declined to lift it last month. The Baseball Writers Association of America will not induct him into the Baseball Hall of Fame as long as he is banned from the sport.

He remains the all-time leader in hits with 4,256 during his 24-year career. Rose was a 16-time All-Star and a big part of the Big Red Machine, which won the 1975 and 1976 World Series. Rose was also on the 1980 Phillies team that won the World Series.
