Browns hire Hue Jackson as their new coach

The Cleveland Browns hired Cincinnati Bengal offensive coordinator Hue Jackson as their new head coach on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

Jackson will replace Mike Pettine who was fired after two seasons. Pettine was 10-22 in those two seasons with the Browns. Jackson becomes the Browns eighth coach since 1999 and their sixth coach since 2008, according to the Associated Press.

He was also a candidate for the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers job and was scheduled to fly to New York for an interview with the Giants Wednesday night, ESPN notes.

This will be the second time that Jackson has been a head coach. In 2011, he coached the Oakland Raiders and went 8-8. After being fired from the Raiders, he became the Bengals defensive assistant. Jackson was the Bengals offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. The Bengals ranked 15th in overall offense this season and Jackson helped quarterback Andy Dalton have his best season before he got injured, according to Fox Sports. He also helped the Bengals make the playoffs but they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card game on Saturday.

The Browns have the second overall pick in this year’s draft and will likely get a quarterback. Jackson wants the Browns to move on from current quarterback Johnny Manziel.
