Blade Runner 2 is officially happening and the production now has a start date.
According to Indie Wire, the science-fiction sequel will begin filming this July. Warner Bros. will distribute in the United States, while Sony has nabbed the international rights. This fits in with Ryan Gosling's recent comment that Blade Runner 2 would be his next movie, as we previously reported.
Blade Runner 2 will see Harrison Ford returning to another iconic character of his, this time Rick Deckard from Ridley Scott's classic film based on the Philip K. Dick short story. We don't know much about the plot yet except that it will take place several decades after the events of the original. Michael Green (Green Lantern) wrote the movie along with Hampton Fancher, co-screenwriter of the first Blade Runner. It will be directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners).
Although some fans are skeptical about the idea of a sequel to Blade Runner, Harison Ford has praised the film's script, going as far as to call it the best screenplay he has ever read, Ridley Scott told The Hollywood Reporter. Considering all the incredible movies Ford has been in throughout his career, that's one hell of a claim.
Blade Runner 2 is expected in theaters in 2017.
