ABC developing Watergate event series

ABC is reportedly developing a new event series on Watergate, with a focus on what went on inside the Nixon White House as it began to crumble.

The project was first reported on by Deadline. It comes from Entertainment One and producer Bob Cooper.

The story will be told from the perspective of John Dean, the White House Counsel for President Richard M. Nixon. Dean thinks he’s getting a great job in Washington, but soon realizes that he is going to be the fall guy when the Watergate scandal is exposed. To make sure that doesn’t happen, he risks everything to fight the Oval Office.

Writer Jon Maas is basing his script off of Dean’s The Nixon Defense: What He Knew And When He Knew It, Alden Dyer Cohen’s The Women of Watergate and Jason Grote’s treatment The System. The project is currently simply titled Watergate.

Consulting producers are Dean and Grote, while Mass, Bob Cooper of Storyscape Entertainment, San Halsted, Eric Hamburg and Jeff Field are the executive producers.

ABC looks to be very interested in event series as of late. Next month, the network will debut Madoff, which stars Richard Dreyfuss as Bernie Madoff. The two-night series debuts on Feb. 3 and 4.
