This past year was a great one for film. The year never broke down into a two-horse awards race like 2014 did, when it became clear that everyone was focused on Boyhood and Birdman. In 2015, we’ve seen a number of films that could join the best of the decade.
Unfortunately, we haven’t seen all that 2015 has had to offer. David O. Russell’s Joy, Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight have all been held back for release at the absolute last moment. Those last two movies won’t even go wide until Jan. 8. And The Weinstein Company has been very selective about how it releases Todd Haynes’ Carol, even as it continues to rack up nominations.
However, both Brendan Morrow and I are sure that they have seen enough to make a Top 10 list for 2015. At the end, we’ll share our individual Top 10s, which will probably end up changing once we see more.
