Suspect in downtown Atlanta shooting killed after exchanging gunfire with police

Authorities have said that a suspect, who exchanged gunfire with police officers on the streets of downtown Atlanta, was killed in the shootout.

The Associated Press noted that the shooting happened Monday night near the Aloft Atlanta Downtown hotel, when officers attempted to pull over a car traveling on the wrong side of the road. Before they were able to though the vehicle was involved in an accident with the hotel’s shuttle bus.

The two men inside then jumped out of the car and fled. The driver was arrested about a block away, but the passenger started shooting at police officers in the vicinity.

"The fleeing male began shooting at officers, which caused officers on scene to return fire striking the suspect multiple times which resulted in his death," a statement from the police department said.

CBS46 noted that a .45 caliber  gun was found next to the deceased suspect’s body. He has been identified by the medical examiner as Darius Smith, 18, of Greer, South Carolina. Law enforcement officials said they also found a number of drugs and guns in the car Smith was riding in.
