Scott Weiland, former Stone Temple Pilots singer, dies at 48

Scott Weiland, former powerhouse and lead singer of '90s grunge-alternative band Stone Temple Pilots and the supergroup Velvet Revolver, was found dead Thursday night at the age of 48.

A statement released on Weiland's Instagram page said that he died during his sleep on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota with his current band, The Wildabouts.

Despite a history of superhuman drug abuse, news of Weiland’s passing came as a shock to some.

“I am speechless…and sad at the loss of my friend, and although many of you are probably not surprised, it doesn’t make it any easier," former MTV personality Matt Pinfield wrote on Facebook. "Addiction sucks. I will miss you Scott.”

“Just learned our friend Scott Weiland has died. So gutted, I am thinking of his family tonight," Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro tweeted.

The cause of death was not given in the official statement. The statement asked that the “privacy of Scott’s family to be respected.”
