The American Film Institute announced its Top 10 lists for television and movies, and suddenly gave Star Wars: The Force Awakens some awards season legitimacy.
The AFI included The Force Awakens on its Top 10 movie list, but it wasn’t the only blockbuster. Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Inside Out and Straight Outta Compton all made the list.
Other entries were the lower-budget Oscar favorites, including Spotlight, Carol, Bridge of Spies, The Big Short and Room.
On the TV side, USA Network’s Mr. Robot continued its march towards awards season glory with a spot on the list. Only three comedies are on the list - Netflix’s Master of None, ABC’s Black-ish and Lifetime’s Unreal.
While the second half of Mad Men’s final season did not make the list, the show earned a special award for its overall contribution to “America’s cultural legacy,” the AFI said. The show made the list seven times, the most ever for a TV show during the AFI Awards’ history.
The AFI Awards ceremony will take place on Jan. 8 with a private luncheon.
