St. Louis Cardinals acquire Jedd Gyorko, trade Jon Jay to San Diego Padres

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired second baseman Jedd Gyorko in a trade with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

The Cardinal sent center fielder Jon Jay to the Padres for Gyorko, who signed a six-year contract extension with the Padres in April 2014.

In addition to Gyorko, the Cardinals are also getting about $7.5 million from the Padres to help offset the $32 million that Gyorko is owed over the next four seasons, according to MLB.com. Jay has a $6,225,000 salary for next season.

Gyorko has been with the Padres for the last three seasons. He is going to be a super-utility player for the Cardinals. This year, he hit .247 with 16 homeruns and 57 RBI’s, according to ESPN. Gyorko has a .236 average with 49 home runs and 171 RBI’s in his three-year career.

Jay helped the Cardinals win the World Series in 2011, but he had to deal with injuries all year. He hit a career-low .210 with one homerun and ten RBI’s in 79 games this year. Jay has a .287 career average.

Jay will become a free agent after the 2016 season.
