Pete Rose won’t be returning to baseball anytime soon. Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred announced that he will not lift Rose’s lifetime ban on baseball.
Manfred called Rose on Monday to inform him of the decision. The slugger was banned from baseball in 1989 after an MLB investigation led by John Dowd concluded that he bet on baseball while he was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds. He also bet on baseball when he played for the Reds. Over the years Rose has denied betting on baseball but admitted to it in a 2004 autobiography, according to the New York Times, which first reported the decision.
Rose filed for reinstatement for the first time in 1992 and applied again in 1997. In 2002, he met with former commissioner Bud Selig but Selig never ruled on the application.
In March, Rose filed his third appeal for reinstatement. He met with Manfred in September and the commissioner said Rose told him on that meeting that he currently bets on horses and sports, including baseball, USA Today reports.
"Mr. Rose's public and private comments, including his initial admission in 2004, provide me with little confidence that he has a mature understanding of his wrongful conduct, that he has accepted full responsibility for it, or that he understands the damage he has caused," Manfred said in his decision. “I respect Mr. Rose's accomplishments as a player and, as a result, I will continue to allow him to participate in ceremonial activities that present no threat to the integrity of the game, provided that the activities are approved by me in advance."
Rose played for the Reds from 1963 to 1978 and from 1984 to 1986. He managed the Reds from 1984 until 1989. In his 24-year career Rose had 4,256 hits, making him the all-time hits king. He was also an All-Star 16 times and won three batting championships, Sports Illustrated noted.
Manfred said that the decision not to lift the ban doesn’t affect Rose’s eligibility for the Hall of Fame.
Rose is currently a baseball analyst for Fox Sports.
