Two earthquakes hit California on Tuesday evening and rattled both the northern and southern portions of the state.
CBS SF noted that data gathered from the U.S. Geological Survey said that two quakes actually struck both ends of the state and each had a magnitude of over 4.0.
The first temblor, which registered at 4.9 on the Richter scale, shook an area near Eureka in Northern California just after 5:30 p.m.
The second was a reported 4.8 magnitude quake that struck near the Fontana area in San Bernardino County in Southern California around 5:45. However, some reports have said that the quake was closer to a 4.4 magnitude. Aftershocks followed and the strongest was a 3.8 magnitude. According to the Mercury News, there have been four quakes with a 3.0 or greater magnitude in the region over the past 10 days.
Hours after the California earthquakes, another quake was felt in the Vancouver and Victoria area in British Colombia, Canada. That tremor was also over a magnitude of 4.0 and woke may residents out of their sleep.
