After the Deflategate scandal cemented the New England Patriots' reputation for cheating, or at least skirting the rules if not breaking them, the Miami Dolphins took some extra precautions when they played them in New England in October.
The precautions that the Dolphins took were a preventative measure so that the Patriots couldn’t cheat in any way. They brought extra equipment staff to the game to make sure that the Patriots didn’t touch or potentially tamper with their equipment, according to the Miami Herald.
The week before the Dolphins-Patriots game in October, the NFL swept the visiting locker rooms of the New York Jets for electronic listening devices and bugs, according to multiple reports. A spokesman for the NFL said that the request to sweep the locker room wasn’t made by the Jets.
Mike Tannenbaum, the Dolphins vice president of football operations, has a history with the Patriots' cheating. In 2007, Tannenbaum was the general manager of the Jets when they accused the Patriots of illegally taping the Jets coaches in an attempt to seal their signs, according to ESPN. The Patriots were fined $250,000 and lost their first-round pick for 2008, and coach Bill Belichick was fined $500,000 for the incident, which became known as Spygate.
The Dolphins play the Patriots in Miami on Sunday. The Patriots will clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if they win on Sunday.
