HBO’s The Leftovers has just completed its second season. This unique drama has accomplished something that is extremely rare when it comes to television, after an incredibly impressive and intense first season; the show has surpassed that brilliance with their second season.
The fate of this drama is currently unknown but this show needs and has earned a third season. This drama features some of the most unique writing, characters and storylines that have been seen on television in the past ten years.
For those unfamiliar with The Leftovers, it tells the stories of those impacted by “the sudden departure.” This mysterious event refers to the fact that 140 million people disappeared without a trace on October 14, 2014.
The Leftovers features Justin Theroux, Liv Tyler, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Carrie Coon and Chris Zylka. These actors have given their characters life and have seamlessly fallen into their roles. All of the actors, including the supporting cast, bring award worthy performances. The actors elevate their skills to the complex and intellectual level of the show.
We as the audience experience this world through Garvey for most of season one. Theroux delivers an emotional, intense and complex performance playing Kevin Garvey. What season two did was change the storytelling style. The second season allowed the audience to experience this post departure world from many different viewpoints and brand new characters. This type of storytelling and extreme character development isn’t seen often on TV.
Damon Lindelof, Lost, is one of the main writers of this HBO drama. Lindelof is known for his exceptional and odd ability for storytelling. He creates a story in which every detail matters and can be linked back to something else but the audience doesn’t have every piece to the puzzle until the end of a series, if they ever complete the puzzle at all. The Leftovers is no exception when it comes to Lindelof’s unique ability. In fact, this is easily one of the most intelligent, interesting and evocative shows to be on TV and it treats its viewers as such.
This show doesn’t contain filler episodes, instead every storyline; every character has a bigger and important meaning to advancing the show. This show has such potential and has already set up critical storylines; we as the audience deserve the ability to keep going on the journey with these characters.
Modern television viewing culture is changing; binge watching in mass has helped to save shows that early on had small ratings, i.e., Breaking Bad. The Leftovers is very similar to that of Bad. The story is building overtime along with character development. Bad needed the time to fully tell the story of Walter White.
Fans that love the show currently are encouraging others to watch it and begging HBO to keep it. This is the type of show that has the ability to gain audiences through binge watching and increase ratings in their third season.
It is often said that shows should go out at the top of their fame and popularity, to avoid a downfall in quality. The Leftovers has only just begun to create this world and these characters. The show isn’t at the height of its fame; instead it is becoming one of the smartest and brilliant dramas on TV and deserves the change to continue.
Simply put, The Leftovers shouldn’t depart before its time.
