Trailer Park: ‘The 33,’ ‘Love the Coopers,' ‘My All-American’ hope to score big at the box office

Tragedy, Christmas and football bring people together in this week’s new releases. Many of the new films feature a cast of popular actors. A few bring true stories to the big screen, including a harrowing tale that hit the news in 2010.

An explosion in a gold and copper mine buries men alive, two hundred stories below the earth’s surface in The 33. For 69 days, the 33 miners lived underground with limited resources, yearning to reunite with their families. The PG-13 drama is based on the true story of the 2010 mine collapse in Chile. Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, James Brolin, Lou Diamond Philipps, Bob Gunton and Gabriel Byrne star in the two-hour film.

 

A dysfunctional family comes together for Christmas in Love the Coopers. With four generations under one roof, surprises come to light and bonds grow stronger. John Goodman, Ed Helms, Diane Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, Jake Lacy and June Squibb star in PG-13 comedy. It runs one hour and 46 minutes.

 

A teen with a drive to succeed defies odds and is awarded a football scholarship to the University of Texas in My All-American. At the top of his game and with the team amidst a winning season, he is plagued with an injury that puts his dedication to the test. The PG drama is based on a true story. It is written by Angelo Pizzo, the man behind Rudy and Hoosiers. The one hour and 58-minute film stars Finn Wittrock, Aaron Eckhart, Sarah Bolger and Robin Tunney.

 

A casino robbery attempt goes wrong in Heist. With a mobster and his men on their tails, two men take to the streets and seize control of a public bus, holding the passengers hostage. Police join in on the chase as the men try to figure out what they need to do to stay alive. The limited released thriller stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Robert De Niro, Kate Bosworth, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, D.B. Sweeney and Morris Chestnut. The 90-minute film is rated R for violence, language and sex.

 

A couple, with their marriage on the rocks, goes on a trip to France in By the Sea. As they socialize with fellow travelers, their marital issues come to a head. The limited released, 1970’s romantic drama is written, directed and stars Angelina Jolie Pitt, opposite her husband Brad Pitt. The two hour and 12-minute film is rated R for sex, nudity and language.

 

After being mistaken for a blind date, a woman, disgusted with dating, decides whether or not to keep the charade going in Man Up. After a fun-filled night, she confesses that she’s not who he thinks she is.  This chance meeting brings her new hope in the dating world. The one hour and 28-minute romantic comedy stars Simon Pegg and Lake Bell. The limited released film is rated R for language and sex.

A young man struggles with his place in life in James White. When his mother is diagnosed with cancer, he tries to curb his reckless behavior and get his life on track. Christopher Abbott and Cynthia Nixon star in the drama. The coming of age film is playing in limited theaters for one hour and 25 minutes. It’s rated R for drugs, sex, nudity and language.

 

A struggling comedian sets out on a tour with the hope of making it big in Entertainment. As he travels across the California desert, he isolates himself from others around him while trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The comedic drama stars Gregg Turkington, John C. Reilly and Michael Cera. The one hour and 50 minute film is available in limited theaters. It’s rated R for language, sex and drugs.

 

Anthony Mackie stars alongside award-winning actors in this week’s comedy Love the Coopers. Next week, he tries to bring on the laughs again in another comedy, The Night Before, starring Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Nov. 20 is also the release date for the highly anticipated The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.
