Universal's Straight Outta Compton came out this past summer and took the world for a crazy ride. Despite hitting theaters in August, the film is still making box office history.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that director F. Gary Grey's film has become the highest-grossing movie directed by an African American director. Straight Outta Compton has officially passed $200 million worldwide.
The film racked up the fifth highest August opening in history, as well as three weekends at the top of the box office. With the success of his film, Grey has made himself one of the hottest directors in Hollywood. He was also picked to helm Furious 8 last month.
Grey could break his own record with Furious 8, notes Cinema Blend. Furious 7 was the first film in the Fast & Furious franchise to break $1 billion worldwide. With the films getting more popular and bringing in more money, Furious 8 could hit that mark too. With Grey at the helm, it is already off to a good start.
Right now, Grey can sit back and relax thanks to his success, but he has to be back at work soon if Furious 8 is to hit theaters in April 2017.
