Passion Pit lead singer Michael Angelakos comes out as gay after separation from wife

The lead singer of Passion Pit, Michael Angelakos, has come out as gay in a new interview with Brett Easton Ellis on the screenwriter's B.E.E. podcast.

Angelakos and his wife, Kristy Mucci, split in August and he had nothing but praise for her throughout the interview. In fact, he recalled her being the one to tell him not to “hate himself” and embrace the way he feels about his sexuality.

“I just wanted so badly to be straight, because I love her so much,” he told Ellis. “I think that was one of the most painful things when we decided to separate.”

Angelakos, 28, told Ellis, "I am saying something that I've never said before publicly,” adding that he didn’t feel “threatened” to come out publicly in the format he did.

“I'm gay. And that's it. It just has to happen,” he said about coming out. “This was exactly the type of situation where I don't feel like I'm being threatened."

After the interview, he took to Twitter via his band’s account and thanked fans for accepting him. “I've received so many kind and supportive messages today,” he wrote. “thank you for reaching out and being so kind to me.”
