Midwest hit by tornadoes, powerful storm system heading east (Video)

Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas were hit by a snowstorm on Wednesday. That same system is to blame for reported tornadoes in Iowa and now the storm is threatening the East.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm began Tuesday in Utah and moved eastward bringing a foot of snow to the Rockies and dangerously high winds to the plains. Blizzard like conditions were also felt in New Mexico and Wyoming.

CBS News noted that more than 10 tornadoes were reported in and around Iowa where an EF-1 tornado mixed with heavy rain swept through the state on Wednesday. The violent winds also hit Kansas and blew the roof of some homes there.

So far, no injuries due to the storm have been reported.

The bad weather will continue as the system heads toward the East and could disrupt travel in Chicago, Detroit and Pittsburgh. Weather officials have forecasted that the high winds are expected to stretch into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic by Friday.
