Amazon Studios and Sony’s TriStar Television have picked Matt Bomer to star in The Last Tycoon, a series based on the novel F. Scott Fitzgerald was writing at the time of his death.
The project, which has Captain Phillips writer Billy Ray signed to write and direct, has been in the works for a long time. It started out at HBO in 2013, then moved to Amazon last year. Executive producers on the series include Chris Keyser (Party of Five), Ray, Perri Kipperman, Josh Maurer, David Stern and Alex Witlin.
The Last Tycoon is set in 1930s Hollywood, with young hotshot producer Stahr (Bomer) clashing with his mentor Pat Brady. Stahr was inspired by the young MGM producer Irving G. Thalberg. The novel was previously adapted by director Elia Kazan in 1976.
Coincidentally, Amazon’s current pilot season includes the Christina Ricci pilot Z, which is about Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda.
Bomer is best known for starring in White Collar and the Magic Mike movies. He won a Golden Globe for The Normal Heart and currently stars in American Horror Story.
