Johnny Depp to receive Palm Springs Film festival award

Johnny Depp starred in Black Mass, which was released a few months ago. The film received good reviews and it was arguably Depp’s best performance in recent memory. Now he will be rewarded for his acting.

According to Variety, Depp will be presented with the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival for his portrayal of Whitey Bulger. Depp gave it his all to play the former mob boss and once again showed his range as an actor.

Festival Chairman Harold Matzner said, “In his latest film, Black Mass, Depp, in a stunning transformation, creates a gripping and multi-layered portrait of infamous gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger. He delivers an astounding performance that has earned raves from both critics and audiences and is sure to garner awards attention.”

As we previously reported, Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan will also be honored with the award. Depp is also the recipient of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Modern Master Award.

Previous Desert Palm Achievement Award winners include Jeff Bridges, Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Colin Firth, Matthew McConaughey, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt and Eddie Redmayne.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival runs from Jan. 1-11.
