Donald Trump denies mocking reporter with a disability

Donald Trump has found himself in hot water again, this time for claims that he mocked a New York Times reporter who has a disability.

Trump brought up Serge Kovaleski’s article for the Washington Post in an attempt to support his claims there were thousands of Muslims cheering in New Jersey after the 9/11 attacks in 2001 during a campaign rally in South Carolina on Tuesday, where he wailed his arms around in the air in what some would call an impersonation of Kovaleski. Kovaleski has a chronic condition that affects his joints and limits the mobility of his arms, TIME reports.

However, Trump maintains he didn’t know what Kovaleski looked like at the time of the rally and was unaware of his condition. In a statement he accused the reporter of using his disability to “grandstand.” He even demanded an apology from the New York Times.

“I do not know the reporter for the @nytimes, or what he looks like,” he tweeted. “I was showing a person groveling to take back a statement made long ago!”

Kovaleski believes the Republican presidential candidate does remember meeting him years ago, calling what he did “low-rent" and unsurprising.

“Kovaleski must think a lot of himself if he thinks I remember him from decades ago — if I ever met him at all, which I doubt I did,” Trump said. “He should stop using his disability to grandstand and get back to reporting for a paper that is rapidly going down the tubes.”

“Despite having one of the all-time great memories I certainly do not remember him,” he also said.
