Colin Kaepernick with San Francisco 49ers on injured reserve

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick with the San Francisco 49ers was put on injured reserve on Saturday.

According to ESPN, Kaepernick told the 49ers that he wanted to have surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, which led them to putting him on injured reserve. Kaepernick injured his left shoulder in week four, but started the next four games before he was benched. He was listed as probable for Sunday’s game, but the 49ers promoted rookie quarterback Dylan Thompson to the active roster to replace Kaepernick, NFL.com notes.

Kaepernick, 28, has made just eight starts this season. He completed 144 of 243 passes, which is 59 percent, for 1,615 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions in those eight games, according to Fox Sports. He also ran for 256 yards and a touchdown on 45 carries. Kaepernick’s 78.5 passer rating is the fifth lowest in the NFL.

Kaepernick’s future with the 49ers is in question. He signed a team-friendly deal last year, which allows the 49ers to choose not to re-sign him. Kaepernick’s $13.9 million salary doesn’t become guaranteed until April 1 if he’s on the roster.

The 49ers are currently 3-6 and are in last place in the NFC West.
