Chipotle closes restaurants after E. coli scare

Health officials in Washington and Oregon said that several Chipotle restaurants in those states closed over the weekend after nearly two dozen cases of E. coli were reported.

KGW-TV noted that a health authority spokesperson said that in the last month at least 22 people have fallen ill from E.coli linked to the Mexican food chain.

"Many people affected with Shiga toxin E. coli may not seek health care, so the number of people made ill by this outbreak is likely more than identified," said Oregon Health Authority spokesman Jonathan Modie. "Health officials want people who have eaten at a Chipotle between Oct. 14 and 23 and become ill with vomiting and bloody diarrhea to see their health-care provider and mention this outbreak."

Samples from individuals who did receive medical treatment will be sent to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration laboratory for testing to try and determine the source of the outbreak, NBC News reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the symptoms of Escherichia coli include severe stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea with bloody stool. The infection can be life threatening.
