Stephen Colbert addresses Oregon shooting on ‘Late Show’ (Video)

Stephen Colbert had some poignant things to say about the recent Oregon shooting in a segment on the Late Show.

Taking a moment to address Thursday’s Umpqua Community College shooting on the Late Show Friday night, Colbert delivered a sobering monologue. He expressed his sadness about the shooting and his frustration about the lack of change in the aftermath.

“In the face of the killings in Oregon yesterday, I honestly don’t know what to do or say, other than that our hearts are broken for the people struck by this senseless tragedy,” Colbert said. “I can’t pretend that it didn’t happen. I also can’t pretend to know what to do to prevent what happened yesterday.”

Colbert went on to express his frustration about the lack of change in gun laws in his monologue, saying that mass shootings “happen over and over again,” yet nothing changes in regards to stricter gun laws or legislation, “as we pretend it won’t happen again.”

He concluded his segment on gun violence with a biting remark. “One of the definitions of insanity is changing nothing, and then pretending that something will change," he said.

Gun control and mass shooting violence has been controversial issues in the U.S. for years. According to shootingtracker.com, there have been 297 recorded instances of mass shootings in 2015 alone.

Later in the segment, Colbert went on to address Donald Trump’s “honest insanity” and Congress.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
