Recurring Fox News guest Wayne Simmons indicted on fraud charges

Recurring Fox news contributor Wayne Simmons has been arrested and indicted on charges of fraud after claiming he had a long career with the CIA.

Media Matters for America reported a federal grand jury indicted Simmons Thursday on "charges of major fraud against the United States, wire fraud, and making false statements to the government" after he claimed he worked as an "Outside Paramilitary Special Operations Officer" from 1973 to 2000.

Simmons is also a member of the "Citizens Commission on Benghazi," a group created by the conservative media organization Accuracy in Media that has put forth conspiracy theories about the attack in Benghazi, Libya.

According to CNN Money, Fox News spokesperson Irena Briganti told CNN that Simmons "was never a contributor to Fox News" and that he appeared only as a non-paid guest, declining to comment any further on the situation. In his appearances, Simmons would frequently make extreme and suspicious comments regarding terrorism and national security such as claims of there being "at least 19 paramilitary Muslim training facilities in the United States" and that waterboarding is not torture.

The indictment also alleges Simmons  defrauded an individual victim out of approximately $125,000 in connection with a bogus real estate investment.

U.S. officials told CNN that government  agencies have received multiple calls regarding claims Simmons made on his website about past work, raising suspision over his illustrious resume and that the CIA is "working closely with the Justice Department on this matter."

If convicted Simmons could face up to 35 years in prison.
