Paddington took the box office by storm when it came out earlier this year, and to nobody’s surprise, a sequel is already in the works.
Deadline confirmed that Paul King will return to write and direct the sequel. King used his independent film experience to help bring wit and charm to Paddington and it paid off, as the film made over $260 million at the box office.
Paddington is based off the popular children's books penned by Michael Bond, which started in 1958 and has spanned to over 20 books.
Paddington tends to find himself in jams where he needs to use quick wit to get himself out. Armed with nothing more than his trusty hat and coat, as well as a suitcase full of tricks, the lovable Paddington shows politeness and courtesy, which is the perfect hero for a children’s book.
Cinema Blend speculates that StudioCanal, the producers of the film, want to make a franchise out of the popular character and that puts a lot of pressure on Paul King. Both parties are on the same page and do not want to rush into anything, so don’t expect to see Paddington 2 rushed into theaters.
