"The responsibility is somewhat daunting, as I have never been president of anything before," Street said in a statement released by the festival. She went to add that she is "grateful for the honor."

In 2012, Streep, 66, was honored with a Golden Bear lifetime achievement award by festival organizers. They also honored her with other awards in the past, including the Berlinale Camera in 1999 and a shared Silver Bear with Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore in 2003.

According to The Guardian, Streep will lead the panel in picking Gold and Silver Bears awards for best film, best actor and best actress. The other members of the jury have not been announced.

It is hard to believe that, in her long and lustrous career, Streep has never served on a festival jury before. She is a three-time Academy Award winner and is considered one of the greatest actors of all time.

The 66th Berlin festival is the first of the major European festivals and runs from Feb. 11 to Feb. 21.
