E! News reported while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres show Monday, the actor had a chance to talk to the talk show host for the first time about the famous selfie, which featured stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts and Kevin Spacey.

DeGeneres revealed to Cooper that the plan for the selfie was to get Meryl Streep out of the photo entirely.

“The whole joke was I was trying to break the internet so that Meryl and I would have the most retweets,” DeGeneres said.

However, Cooper did not understand what the joke was supposed to be and was trying to help get as many people in the photo as he could. DeGeneres told him it ended up being a great photo regardless, telling him “it was fantastic.”

Then she displayed a photo from the back that showed Liza Minelli trying to get into the photo, but failing since everyone else was taller.
