Trevor Noah prepares to take over ‘The Daily Show,’ compares the new show to Ryan Adams

Trevor Noah’s debut as only the third host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show comes on Monday and he has to prove to audiences that he can still be as funny as Jon Stewart while establishing his own voice.

During interviews this week, the South African comedian compared his Daily Show to Ryan Adams’ new record, which is a song-by-song cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989. Like Adams, Noah is presenting something that’s already popular and beloved, but taking a different spin on it. Coincidentally, Adams will be Noah’s first musical guest on Friday’s show.

“...He took Taylor Swift and [went] and remade that to much acclaim, and exceptionally well,” Noah told reporters during a Q&A session Friday, notes Entertainment Weekly. “And I really appreciated that. I loved what he was doing. And as a team, we said, ‘Wouldn’t it be fantastic to get someone like that on?’ Because he’s done in essence what we’ve done here, in that he’s taken something that was loved by many — cherished by many — and he’s created a new version of it for himself, and people have gone, ‘Wow, this is actually amazing.’ We can still like Taylor Swift, but we can also like Ryan Adams’ 1989.”

Comedy Central also showed off Noah’s new Daily Show set. It certainly has a hint of Stewart’s set, but there’s some obvious differences. In an interview with CNN, he pointed out the larger area for musical performances. Adams will just be the start of The Daily Show’s transformation into another stop for artists to promote their work.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Noah also told reporters that he is open to having any presidential candidate on the show. He was also sad to hear that House Speaker John Boehner is resigning, which means they might have to change around some jokes.

“That’s sad. I liked him. He always cried. He’s really cool,” Noah said of Boehner.

Noah’s first guest will be comedian Kevin Hart. His first political guest is New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday. Christie is currently running for the Republican presidential nomination.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (that is still weird to type...) will debut on Monday at 11 p.m. on Comedy Central.
