An Irish mobster rises to power in Black Mass. By collaborating with the FBI to take down the Italian mob, James “Whitey” Bulger is able to gain more influence and become extremely dangerous. The two hour and two minute crime drama stars Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson and Peter Sarsgaard. It’s rated R for violence, language, sex and drugs.
A group of climbers attempt to scale the planet’s highest peak in Everest. Their mission takes a turn for the worse when a catastrophic snow storm creeps in. Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal star in the PG-13 film. The two hour and one minute adventure is based on real events.
Thomas and the Gladers try to find out what’s behind the WCKD in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. The group faces many obstacles as they travel through a deserted area looking for evidence. The PG-13 sci-fi adventure is playing in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D for two hours and eleven minutes.
A criminal breaks out of prison and kidnaps a young woman recovering from a drug addiction in Captive. Imprisoned in her own home and yearning to see her child, she finds solace in Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. The same book also brings hope to the murderer on the run. The PG-13 drama stars Kate Mara, David Oyelowo and Mimi Rogers. The dramatic thriller runs for one hour and thirty-seven minutes.
An FBI agent is sent on a mission to stop the drug trafficking on the US/Mexico border in Sicario. As she gets pulled deeper into the crime world, she begins to doubt everything around her, including her advisor. The limited released action film stars Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Victor Garber, Jon Bernthal. The two hour and one minute crime drama is rated R for violence and language.
A teenager and her family struggle with gender identity issues in About Ray. Ray, formerly Ramona, decides to make the transition from female to male. In order to do so, he must get both of his parents’ consent. Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon and Tate Donovan star in the limited released drama. The unrated film runs for one hour and twenty-seven minutes.
The story of chess master Bobby Fischer is told in Pawn Sacrifice. The PG-13 drama shows his struggles as a prodigy and his challenge with famed Soviet Union player, Boris Spassky, during the height of the Cold War. The one hour and fifty-six minute film is based on real events and stars Tobey Maguire, Peter Sarsgaard and Liev Schreiber. It’s playing limited theaters but expands to more areas on September 25.
There’s an epidemic that turns children into flesh-eating zombies in Cooties. The elementary school teachers are on the run from the kids infected from the cafeteria food. Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Jack McBrayer, and Jorge Garcia star in the unrated film. The limited released comedic horror film runs for one hour and thirty-six minutes.
After all the drama in theaters this week, the films debuting in theaters next week bring some comic relief. Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway’s The Intern and the animated film Hotel Translyvania 2 enter the box office race.
