Swiss prosecutors are now turning their attention to Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA.
The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) interrogated Blatter following a meeting of the soccer governing body’s executive committee, reports USA Today. Blatter cancelled a scheduled news conference, while his office in Zurich was searched by authorities.
Swiss officials have been working with U.S. prosecutors to investigate corruption within FIFA. Fourteen FIFA former and current executives were indicted in May. Just days later, Blatter was overwhelmingly re-elected president, but he did step down in June. He later claimed that he “did not resign” and will remain in office until an “extraordinary congress” of FIFA executives is called before next year’s congress in May 2016.
According to Reuters, OAG also said that they questioned Michel Platini, who runs Europe’s UEFA. A source told the site that Platini provided evidence against Blatter and isn’t targeted by investigators. The former soccer star is expected to replace Blatter.
