New Line is trying to bring A Nightmare on Elm Street back to the big screen and according to Freddy himself, the new movie might actually be a remake of the franchise's most beloved sequel.
In an interview with Red Carpet TV News, Robert Englund speculated that New Line might be trying to remake A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. The Freddy Kruger actor explained that he's heard the studio approached Tuesday Knight, the actress who replaced Patricia Arquette's character in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4.
“I was trying to think ‘what does that mean?' They can’t possibly be remaking Nightmare on Elm Street part one again, they just did that," he said. "I think they may be remaking Nightmare on Elm Street part three.”
This is all speculation on Englund's part, of course, but he noted that it would make sense given that Dream Warriors was the most successful of the franchise and so he speculated they'd be remaking it and having Tuesday Knight play the mother of Patricia Arquette's character.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is indeed the most widely celebrated of the franchise's sequels and some fans even like it more than the original. It introduces the idea of having characters taking control of their dreams to fight back against Freddy rather than just being victims who run away from him. The third movie grossed more than even the original did, taking home $44 million compared to the first film's $25 million.
Could Robert Englund have any involvement in the new movie? He said that he's definitely not being brought back as Freddy, but they might have him cameo as some sort of dream expert or a similar character. That was just an example off the top of his head, but from the way he talked about it in this interview, it certainly sounds like he'd be down to come back.
New Line announced the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot last month, as we previously reported. This will be the studio's second attempt to bring back the franchise; there was also the 2010 remake, which was a huge disappointment for fans and for the studio as well. Meanwhile, remakes of many of the big '80s slasher movies are also in development including Friday the 13th and Halloween.
