New Jersey high school football quarterback dies after injury

A high school football player has died following injuries sustained on the field.

Evan Murray- quarterback of Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, New Jersey- died after being injured during the team’s football game Friday night.

According to the Associated Press , Murray’s cause of death has yet to be determined. During the game the 17-year-old took a hit in the backfield. He felt “woozy” but was able to walk off the field. Soon after he made his way to the sidelines Murray collapsed. As the football player was placed on a gurney, he gave the crowd thumbs up.

The district’s interim superintendent, Gary Bowen, released a statement stating that the school community is “deeply saddened,” but he declined to take questions from reporters.

On Saturday, a memorial was held at the school’s football field, for coaches, students and community members.

In a 2013 study, The New York Daily News reports that on average 12 high school and college football players die each year during practices and games in the U.S.

Earlier this month Louisiana high school football, Tyrell Cameron player died after sustaining an injury during a game.
