Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow talk about the 'Friends' relationship that should have been

Phoebe and Joey could have been each other’s Lobsters, if the writers had listened to Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow.

The Friends costars chatted about their Emmy nominations, behind the scenes Friends scoop, their new shows, and how Phoebe and Joey were the couple that should have been.

In an interview with People, LeBlanc and Kudrow gave us a glimpse of what it was like to work on their little known television series from the nineties. LeBlanc’s funniest friends memory is the “gag reel stuff,” when they couldn’t get through a scene without laughing. “Remember that time you had to say…,” LeBlanc started. Kudrow chimed in, “’At Monica’s you can eat cookies over the sink!’ Yes, I couldn’t say it!”

The actors also talked about why Joey and Phoebe were never a couple. LeBlanc said, “We actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time. We’d go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognizes, there’s Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet. But they were like, ‘Nah.’”

LeBlanc is nominated for his role as Matt LeBlanc, a fictionalized version of himself, in Showtime’s Episodes. Kudrow is nominated for her role as Valarie in HBO’s The Comeback. Both characters are hilarious, but quite narcissistic.

Kudrow channeled Phoebe Buffay on Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour, singing her signature song “Smelly Cat.”

Tune in Sept. 20 to FOX to find out if Kudrow and LeBlanc take home the gold.
