Demolition doesn’t exactly sound like the title of a movie that’s supposed to feature an inspirational story of a man trying to get his life together, but that’s exactly what director Jean-Marc Vallee’s new movie is about.
Gyllenhaal stars as an investment banker who suddenly becomes a widower and the first thing he does is, surprisingly, complain to a vending machine company. He then decides to rebuilt his life be demolishing every part of his life as it stands and start anew. He also strikes a relationship with a customer service rep (Naomi Watts) and her son (Judah Lewis).
While Demolition is playing at some film festivals this fall, Fox Searchlight surprisingly scheduled the film for April 8, 2016. Of course, that means that it won’t be in the running for the 2015 Oscars and will make it hard to compete in 2016. That’s a bit of a surprise, since Marc-Vallee's last two films - Dallas Buyers Club and Wild, have both been awards season players.
Before Demolition, you can spot Gyllenhaal in Everest on Sept. 18. He also starred in Southpaw, which opened in July.
