Iman Shumpert to miss three months after right wrist injury

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert will undergo right wrist surgery this week that will sideline him for at least three months.

Shumpert, 25, was diagnosed with a ruptured Extensor Carpi Ulnaris sheath in his wrist by Dr. Thomas Graham and Dr. Richard Parker at the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health and confirmed by MRI, reports NBA.com. He will likely miss 12-14 weeks.

Reportedly, Shumpert hurt his wrist last week and complained about “latent soreness” to the team at Monday’s media day, according to Cavaliers general manager David Griffin, according to ESPN.

“He worked incredibly hard this offseason and put in a lot, a lot of work,” said Griffin. “And in training last week, he had an issue where he hit the rim with his right wrist. I believe he was trying to catch a lob [pass].”

Shumpert, a fifth-year pro, re-signed with the Cavaliers in July for $40 million over four years in July after averaging 7.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals in 38 games with the Cavs last season after being acquired in a mid-season trade from the New York Knicks.

With Shumpert out until possibly December, the Cavs will have to look to other players to step up and replace his production.

“We have depth,” said superstar LeBron James. “And if it's one position we have it, it's at the guard spot. Bringing back Delly, re-signing J.R., bringing in Richard, bringing in Mo, we have depth at the guard spot, so with this injury, guys should be able to step in.”
