Ellen Page credits 'Freeheld' with helping her come out, has dealt with 'various degrees of homophobia'

Ellen Page promoted her new film Freeheld co-starring Julianne Moore on Good Morning America on Wednesday, where she opened up about her own decision to come out last year.

The film centers on the real-life love story of Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree, who fought for equality.

Page said on GMA she “just so wanted to be a part of telling their story and feel grateful that I got to do that,” adding these two women “are just incredible people who did something so crucial and so important.”

Page, 28, who revealed recently she’s “in love” with her girlfriend Samantha Thomas, who she brought to the premiere of Freeheld, said the film helped her come out publicly.

“It makes you want to do the right thing and live your life in a true, authentic way and be a visible person to the community,” she said.

As for any homophobia she has experienced, Page said “of course I deal with various degrees of homophobia in my life,” but nothing like Hester and Andree.
