Derrick Rose undergoes orbital fracture surgery, return timetable unknown

Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose will undergo surgery on Wednesday after suffering a left orbital fracture.

Rose, who suffered the fracture during Tuesday’s practice, was taken to Rush University Medical Center for testing and evaluation, where it was determined that he needed surgery, per NBA.com. A timetable for Rose’s return will be determined after the procedure.

Rose’s orbital fracture is the latest health setback for the oft-injured former MVP, who has been limited to just 51, 10 and 39 games in the past three seasons due to injuries. Rose tore the ACL in his left knee in April 2012, forcing him to miss the entire 2012-13 season and then tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in November 2013, missing the rest of the 2013-14 season as well.

According to Bulls players and press, Rose received an elbow to the face during Tuesday’s practice, which was the first of the season.

“He got a little elbow,” Bulls power forward Taj Gibson said, ESPN reports. “We don't know the [severity] of it, but hopefully he'll be fine. I know he's tough. But it was one of those plays, especially in practice, where everybody's going hard. It's just tough.”

It remains to be seen how long this latest injury will sideline Rose, 26, who signed a five-year maximum extension near $95 million before the 2011-12 season.

Despite missing much of the past three seasons, Rose believes that he can regain his form that made him one of the most electrifying players in the league.

“I know I'm great. It's a lot of people that don't know I'm great, that's the thing,” Rose said. “But it's cool. I know I can hoop. You can put me anywhere, and I know how to play the game of basketball.”
