On this week’s episode of Chasing Life, April goes to extremes to cope with Leo’s death, Brenna enlists the help of her uncle George when Finn has a relapse, and Sara feels April’s distance.
April receives a copy of Leo’s will and is overwhelmed. She doesn’t feel right keeping the money that’s been left to her. Sara convinces her otherwise. Sara also suggests April consider going to therapy. In addition, they discuss selling Leo’s stuff.
Later, April meets up with Beth and tells her about the money. Beth jokes she’d blow all the money on Etsy and the pair wonder if April should consider finding her own place. When they pass by an expensive-looking store, April and Leo used to poke fun at, April says Beth deserves a gift for being such a good friend and decides to treat her to an item of her choice.
Cue opening theme.
April has new shoes, a new clinical trial, and a new male doctor that Sara seems attracted to. The doctor briefs April about what the new trial entails—taking steroids and injecting herself with syringes twice daily. April isn’t thrilled she’ll be dealing with needles, though she remains adamant about getting better. Once the appointment is over, Sara asks April if she’s thought about returning to support group and April seems to think it’s not a bad idea.
Simultaneously, Brenna brings Finn his assignments when he’s absent from school and decides to keep him company. His stem cells are attacking his body and none of the medicine he’s been prescribed is helping. This means he’ll miss the screening for Brenna’s short film. Finn suggests that Brenna invite Ford or her LGBTQ club friends in his place, much to Brenna’s dismay.
April returns to support group, but remains fairly mum during the meeting. Afterwards, she takes a spin on her new motorcycle.
Brenna makes a comment about April’s new shoes and April offers to buy her a pair. When Brenna declines, April says she could pay for Brenna to go back to Charton, but Brenna says she’s already made her dramatic exit. Enter Sara, who is pleased to see April has joined the rest of the Carver family for dinner and continues to ask questions about support group. When April says support group isn’t working anymore, Sara thinks maybe group therapy would be a better alternative. April shuts her down.
Later, George shows and mentions having to schedule a trip for May before Brenna requests his help in making Finn feel better. Clearly unsettled by the talk of cancer, April leaves the room.
Meanwhile, April starts her new clinical trial. Later, when Brenna checks on her, she apologizes that Finn isn’t feeling good. April also thinks Brenna and Finn are an item, but Brenna quickly corrects her assumption.
Beth, Natalie, Danny, Dominic, & April eat out and catch up at The Charles. April wants to keep spreading the wealth, because her friends have been so good to her and she goes so far as to order multiple bottles of Cristal for everyone to share. April doesn’t want the night to end and tries to bribe the owner to keep The Charles open. When he refuses, April throws a drunken hissy-fit and her friends rush her out in an effort to prevent any further embarrassment.
April wakes up at Beth’s and Beth says she’s worried given April’s recent behavior. April claims she hasn’t been feeling herself and that she got carried away, because she was so drunk. Beth understands and offers to have a low-key girls’ night.
George accompanies Brenna to Finn’s and writes a prescription for Finn that he thinks may help. He also says he can pay for the drugs if Finn’s insurance doesn’t cover it. Finn lets slip about Brenna’s upcoming film festival since he’ll need to stay in once the drugs take effect and George is surprised to hear this news. Caught off guard, Brenna tries to downplay the magnitude of the event.
At the Carver house, Sara feels April’s distance. Meanwhile, April sees her doctor to update him on her prognosis and lets him know she doesn’t feel herself. Since there’s a chance that the drugs are responsible, he advises her to stop taking them and see if there’s a difference. April follows his advice, though she continues with her injections.
Later, April meets up with Beth and the two get in a fight when Beth tells April she needs to stop doing crazy things to cope with Leo’s death.
Following her and Beth’s fight, April has drinks with Vanessa and they talk about how cancer has affected their lives. Vanessa is firm in her belief that she had to get cancer to be happy. April wishes she could be happy again.
At the same time, Brenna screens her film and is surprised when her uncle George shows.
Beth visits Sara and admits she doesn’t know what else to do when it comes to April. Sara counsels Beth to the best of her ability.
Back at the bar, April approaches a guy who’s high on ecstasy and bargains with him to give her his last two tablets.
Brenna is glad her uncle George came to the screening to support her, because she was nervous. George tells her she needs to be more confident in her work and not fear rejection. After their talk, he takes her out for ice cream.
April gets high off the stranger’s ecstasy and Vanessa drops her off to Dominic’s once their wild night is over. April can’t text her mom while high, so Dominic says he’ll let Sara know where April is. April remarks that Dominic is always the one taking care of her. Later, in the middle of the night, April calls her mom and breaks down on the phone.
The next morning, April apologizes for dropping in on Dominic and Dominic tells her she needs to get back to herself. April also vows never to do ecstasy again.
Brenna hands Sara forms to sign before she leaves for school. Brenna wants to enroll in a film program in San Francisco following graduation, though Sara isn’t very keen on the idea. Brenna ignores Sara’s objections, saying that she should be able to go, since her uncle George lives in San Francisco.
April looks for Beth, but Natalie answers and tells her Beth’s at work already. April regrets her behavior, claiming she’s her father’s daughter, but Natalie re-assures her that she and their dad are nothing alike. When April lets slip that George told her Thomas was stressed, because of pressure from Natalie’s mom to maintain their relationship, Natalie says her mom had a boyfriend for years.
Later, when George returns to the Carver house, April is already waiting for him and tells him they need to talk.
End of episode.
