American Airlines flew the wrong plane during an August flight from Los Angeles to Hawaii.
The airline confirmed to CNN that it mistakenly flew a plane uncertified for the journey. American Airlines' spokesman, Casey Norton said that “someone on the ground” noted the mistake after the flight was already on its way to Honolulu. After realizing the mistake, the flight crew and The Federal Aviation Administration were immediately notified and it was decided AA Flight 31 would make the full journey.
The Airbus A321S completed the journey safely and Yahoo News reports Norton told AFP, "It has the same engine, same fuel tanks, same range,” but lacks an “ETOPS” certification that ensures planes flying over water an hour or more away from possible landing areas carry extra emergency equipment.
Norton said the mistake prompted the airline company to conduct a revision of its software to “properly identify the correct aircraft are operating the correct routes.”
According to CNN the return flight was canceled.
