De Niro's Travis Bickle is a classic antihero. After returning from the Vietnam War he is lonely, depressed and lacks basic social skills. He wants to help teenage prostitute Iris and feels that the ends justify the means no matter what he does to get her out of that life because of the way she is being treated.
