Although his ideas might be new, President Obama’s taste in music is still old-school.
Obama released two Spotify playlists Friday, both twenty songs each, with one for daytime and the other for the evening.
According to a White House blog post, both of these playlists were hand picked by none other than the President himself.
The president seemed to stick to music made popular in the 1950’s and ‘60s, with songs like Bob Dylan’s “The Tombstone Blues,” Stevie Wonder’s “Another Star” and “Rock Steady,” by Aretha Franklin. One of Obama’s favorite rock groups, the Rolling Stones, are featured on the playlist with “Gimme Shelter” and Bob Marley is featured with a song perfect for a man in his position, “So Much Trouble in the World.”
According to the New York Times, some songs may even be a reflection of the president’s battles inside the White House. “And “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” by the Temptations, is an interesting choice for a president who faces an uphill battle in Congress persuading members of his own party to approve his nuclear deal with Iran,” said the Times.
The daytime playlist also features some current hits, including Coldplay’s “Paradise” and “Shake it Out” from Florence and the Machine. Obama does not, however, feature the same pop queens that Hillary Rodham Clinton featured on her recent Spotify playlist.
The White House also said that future playlists released on Spotify would be, “issue-specific playlists to songs selected by other people in the White House.”
