Morgan Freeman's step-granddaughter stabbed to death in New York

Legendary actor Morgan Freeman is mourning the loss of his granddaughter E’dena Hines, who was killed in a stabbing in New York City Sunday. She was 33.

According to E! News, an NYPD representative said that the killing took place early Sunday morning. Hines was found with multiple stab wounds on her torso on a street in Harlem. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. A 30-year-old man whose identity has not been released was detained at the scene and taken to a different medical center. No charges have been filed and police are still investigating the incident.

In a statement to E! News Freeman, 78, said about Hines, “The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer. Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”

Hines and Freeman, however, were not related by blood. She was the granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw, who he divorced in 1979. Freeman brought Hines with him to the Golden Globes in 2005.

According to her website, Hines was a former student at the New York University Graduate Acting Program and then taught under-privileged youth in Memphis, Tenn., where she was from. Her blog stated that she originally left New York City because she felt “unfulfilled,” and recently returned to the city after booking a role in a small indie movie.

On getting the role Hines wrote, “My dream has come true and it’s just beginning.”
