Singer Lady Gaga surprised her tourmate Tony Bennett onstage with a cake for his 89th birthday Saturday night.
Gaga sang her version of Duke Ellington’s “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” in front of a sold out audience at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. followed by “Happy Birthday,” in which the 29-year-old singer was accompanied by the crowd.
According to People Magazine, the cake was created by Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes, who was made famous by his show, Ace of Cakes, on the Food Network. The cake was brought out and towered over both artists, as it was a replica of the cake originally created for President John F. Kennedy’s birthday when Marilyn Monroe sang, “Happy Birthday Mr. President.”
Edible versions of Gaga and Bennett were included on the cake and the singer’s pets topped it as Gaga shared a close up of the masterpiece on her Instagram. “Look at the details on this cake,” she wrote. “@missasiakineny and Happy made it too!” She also retweeted a fan video of the
birthday surprise.
This show marked the end of the duo’s seven month tour, which took the two around the United States and around the world to places including Spain, Italy, Denmark and Monaco.
The duo was also nominated for a 2015 Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special for their PBS Special, ‘Cheek to Cheek LIVE.’
