3. Journey to Italy, 1954
There have been many, many films about the break-down of a marriage but none are as effective as Rossellini’s Journey to Italy. Bergman and George Sanders (All About Eve) star as a first class couple from England who go to Italy. Their relationship is already strained and they consider getting a divorce. Bergman’s performance is poignant, as she visits relics of Italy’s past that make her own problems seem insignificant.
