Made during her Italian period, when she was married to Italian director Roberto Rossellini, Europa ‘51 is the very definition of a tortured role for Bergman. It’s an incredibly sad story about a bourgeois woman whose son dies after he commits suicide. She decides to try to help those less well off than her, but is considered insane because of her new cause.
