Ian McShane cast in season six of 'Game of Thrones'

HBO confirmed Saturday that actor Ian McShane will be joining the cast of Game of Thrones.

Entertainment Weekly first reported that the actor will return to HBO after his role on The Deadwood, for the sixth season of the fantasy show. No details on McShane’s character have been released, except that his character will have a small amount of screen time but play a very important role.

Author George R.R. Martin has published five books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series which is planned to run for seven books. No release date has been set for the sixth installment, The Winds of Winter, and the plot is still unknown.

Michael Lombardo, HBO programming president, revealed Thursday that the network was looking to air at least eight seasons of Game of Thrones.

Lombardo said, however, that he was not denying the possibility of a prequel for the show. “There’s enormous storytelling to me minded in a prequel, if [GOT novelist George R.R. Martin] and Dan and David decide they want to tackle that. At this point, all the focus is on the next few years of the show. We haven’t had any conversations about [a new series] at this point.”
