'Chasing Life' Recap: 'The Ghost in You'

On this week’s episode of Chasing Life, April struggles to come to terms with Leo's death and move forward.

The episode opens with April, Sara, and the Hendries waiting for word about Leo. When April’s uncle George arrives, he informs the group that Leo suffered a neurological incident. Since Leo is now dead, funeral plans will need to be made. Leo’s dad, Bruce has specific instructions Leo left before his last surgery that he’ll need to clear with April.

April returns to the Carver house, clearly despondent and tries to rest in private until Brenna enters and says Bruce is downstairs waiting to talk to her. When April joins the conversation, she says she’s fine with what Leo wanted, but doesn’t wish to have a viewing. Bruce says that Leo’s relationship with April helped changed their relationship for the better.

Later, Sara tells April that her friends have been coming by and calling to check on her, but April doesn’t want to see them knowing they’ll just try to cheer her up. She retires to her room to cry and has visions of Leo.

Cue opening theme.

A drag queen sings Amazing Grace at Leo’s funeral and all guests in attendance have balloons to release. Afterwards, Natalie and Beth ask April if they can do anything to help and she mentions not being able to return to her and Leo’s apartment to clean it out. April’s cancer support group friends also visit and April says she’s suppressing her real emotions to make everyone else feel comfortable.

Simultaneously, Sara and George compare April’s grief to when her father, Thomas died and Sara says that things don’t get easier after the funeral is over. She also asks George if he knows anything about a manuscript her daughters claimed their father wrote.

Meanwhile, April has a vision of Leo and they discuss his funeral. Leo tells her to take her time with her grieving process. Moments later when Brenna pops in to check on April, April brushes her off.

Dominic visits the Carver house to see how April is doing and a fight erupts when April accuses Dominic of only dropping by to make himself feel better since he didn’t like Leo. Dominic says that’s not the case, but April won’t hear him out and tells him to leave her alone.

Sara asks April if what she can do to help April get her life back. Even though Leo is gone, April still has her family, friends, book, and health to think about. April mentions still needing to get into a new clinical trial and having her uncle George help her by speaking drug rep, Josh in a week. Sara tells April that a week has already passed and George needs her medical records. April says they’re at her apartment and Beth and Natalie will be clearing it out.

At school, Brenna and Finn talk about Leo and Brenna admits she doesn’t know how to talk to April and April doesn’t want to seem to talk to her. When she changes the subject a beat later, Finn reveals he’s been sick for over a year and lost one of his legs as a result. He also says he’s only sad if he lets himself stay down and plans to beat his previous record at the 200 meter sprint in the spring. He invites Brenna to meet him at the track after school.

Beth and Natalie clean out April and Leo’s apartment and locate April’s medical records. Simultaneously, Beth wonders if she’s not properly reacting to April’s grief.

Later, when Beth visits April, she mentions that drug rep, Josh is going to talk to George. She gives April her medical records and April notices Beth accidentally grabbed Leo’s too by mistake. They find an envelope among the paperwork and inside is a piece of paper with coordinates and a date. April doesn’t want to investigate any possible leads, but Beth thinks she’s reacting prematurely. Beth looks up the coordinates; the location is at Long Wharf.

When they visit the wharf, April and Beth find the Hendrie’s boat and inside is a cash tube with another clue. Leo is having them go on a scavenger hunt.

Brenna accompanies Finn to the track. He starts off strong, but soon falls down, then gets right back up and tries again. Brenna is a bit baffled by Finn’s optimism, so he questions why she’s trying to crush his hopes of overcoming the impossible.

Sara hands off April’s medical records to George and George informs her that family is not allowed to attend the clinical trial meeting. Not wanting to take no for an answer, Sara convinces George to let her go so long as she doesn’t interfere.

Meanwhile, April and Beth continue looking for clues, but hit a snag in the process, prompting Beth to call Dominic for help. Dominic is able to help them fish the clue out of a local statue of William Prescott and the clue leads them to Massachusetts Medical. At the same time, April confesses to Beth that she’s been “talking” to Leo and swears she can feel his presence.

George and Sara meet Josh at the clinical trial meeting. They soon encounter the doctor and George must state why April is a good candidate to be accepted into the trial.

Leo’s scavenger hunt continues at the hospital and April and her friends must sneak into an occupied hospital room to find the next clue. At the same time, Beth finally feels the effects of Leo’s death and confides in Dominic. April and Dominic also reconcile.

Back at the track, Brenna claims she feels useless to both her sister and Finn and she and Finn debate over whether or not there is an afterlife.

George tries to get the doctor to accept April into a new trial with little avail and Sara finds it hard to be quiet. Seeing their struggle, Josh comes up with a possible solution.

Having found the second to last clue, April and her friends are directed to the hospital’s roof. From there, she’s supposed to climb the tree in the cemetery and find what Leo left for her there, but she doesn’t want to be done with the search, because then she’ll really have to acknowledge that Leo’s gone. April doesn’t want to have a future without him.

That night, April “talks” to Leo again and questions him about the end of the scavenger hunt, but he remains mum about the final result. Knowing she needs to find the answers herself, April visits the cemetery and finds a letter from Leo in the tree there.

The next morning at breakfast, April seems better. George updates her on another meeting about the trial and Brenna encourages her to stay optimistic. Later, April hangs out with Beth and Dominic and even visits her and Leo’s apartment.

End of episode.
